Can you believe fall is already nearly here? It feels like summer has barely gotten underway, and here we are discussing jewelry trends for fall! It never ceases to amaze me how quickly summer goes by.
The weather hasn’t undergone any dramatic changes, though; and by the same token, neither have jewelry trends. The shift from summer to fall is a gradual one, and although winter may be very different, fall is simply a cooler version of summer. What is true for the weather is also true for jewelry trends.
Chunky jewelry has been popular lately, and fall trends will be no different. Think stacked necklaces and bracelets, diamond Aqua Master watches with lots of bling, chandelier earrings that flash and swing with the wearer’s movements. Larger pieces with lots of bling, such as large rings, will continue to be popular. Gone are the delicate necklaces and diminutive earring styles of the past: These days, bigger is better!
One noticeable transition will be the shift to more fall-like colors. The runway shows for the season showed that dark, bold colors such as green and black are going to be popular in clothing collections this season, and we should expect similar trends in jewelry. Deep purple and turquoise are other colors that will be popular this fall. Chunky, beaded necklaces, polished stone rings, and other examples of costume jewelry will favor these darker colors.
Another thing we are going to be seeing more of is animal motifs in jewelry. For example, elephants are a popular motif that seems to be getting more common. Snakes and birds are other popular animal motifs. We will also be seeing a lot of other motifs, such as flowers.
As you can see, there are some dramatic changes — such as the popular colors for fall — as well as some continuing trends, such as size. To get your jewelry box ready for fall, first take a look at all your pieces and identify what is no longer in style. Basically, you should be making three piles: still in style, can make it work, and nothing can make this cool! Of the third pile, you may want to get rid of some of it, or at least banish it to the darkest recesses of your jewelry box. You will want it out of your way, somewhere you don’t have to deal with it every day.
Then spread your second pile out on a table or your bed. Look for ways you can make it work: for instance, smaller necklaces or bracelets you can stack to make a bolder statement, a ring you can pair with a glitzy watch, a beaded necklace you can wrap around your wrist and wear as a bracelet, and so on. It might help to spread out your third pile, too, so you can see what else you have to work with — that is, what you can pair pieces with in order to achieve the look you want. Also think about the clothing styles for fall, and how you can mix and match your jewelry with the items in your closet.
Part of getting ready for changes in styles from season to season is discovering how you can use your existing jewelry to achieve new styles. Most of us can’t afford to buy all new jewelry and clothes every season, which is why styles change slowly over time. This also means, however, that you can rest assured that what you buy today won’t truly go out of style for a little while yet — trends change slowly enough that you should get several years of enjoyment out of it, maybe more if you are creative about how you wear it!
