Celebrities are always spoken of as wearing the top trends, but in a way, they actually set the trends — with the help of their personal fashion consultants and the range of top designers available to them in Hollywood, they pick out beautiful new fashions, and the rest of us follow suit. For instance, consider the 2010 Oscars…

Cameron Diaz showed up wearing a gorgeous pair of yellow and rose gold diamond hoop earrings, and two sparkly white gold diamond rings, all by Cartier.

Rachel McAdams wore a gorgeous pair of sparkly chandelier earrings, featuring multicolored diamonds.

Helen Mirren showed how well bling and classic can go together, with her stunning diamond necklace.

Kate Winslet arrived wearing a Tiffany & Co. platinum and yellow diamond pendant necklace and matching chunky bracelet.

Miley Cyrus sported a gorgeous sparkly cuff bracelet, while Sarah Jessica Parker took another take on a similar look by stacking diamond bracelets of varying widths on the same wrist. Bracelets with bling were definitely a theme: Anna Kendrick, Penelope Cruz, Julianne Moore, and Olivia Wilde all wore similar pieces.

There also seemed to be a vintage theme going on. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sarah Jessica Parker both wore vintage diamond bracelets, for example.

Much of the time these days, the stars borrow these pieces from top designers. Designers do this because they get great advertising mileage by having movie stars wear their jewelry at big, televised events — all of the celebrity rags report on what each person wore, which is great publicity for the designers. The pieces are usually prohibitively expensive for most people, but they pave the way for more affordable copies in a similar style.

We often don’t realize how many of our fashions are started by celebrities. Movie stars and singers wear trend-setting clothing and jewelry, and almost immediately, lower-end jewelry companies start designing jewelry that looks similar but costs less to make, so that it can be priced within reach of the rest of us.

The 2010 Oscars are a perfect example: Diamond bracelets, elaborate cuffs, diamond earrings, and vintage-inspired jewelry are popular this season, similar to the styles we oohed and ahhed over at the Oscars. So are elaborate diamond ring settings, such as the gorgeous Cartier rings worn by Cameron Diaz — many elaborate diamond wedding bands are designed with similar themes in mind.

Maybe that’s why we love our bling so much, though — wearing it makes us feel like stars!
